A Message from Our Founder

Elias Voulgaris

Greetings, I am respectfully asking you to join or renew with the Hellenic American Police Association if you have not done so already.

I founded the Hellenic American Police Association for you, a Greek-American or Greek Cypriot-American in law enforcement, Active or Retired. I founded the HAPA so that we can enrich each other through our ethnicity, our culture, our traditions, our faith, and our families; coupled with our noble law enforcement profession. I want to unite us; to provide a venue of support for each other!

The Hellenic American Police Association is your association! You are the heart and soul of the Hellenic American Police Association. The HAPA is here for all, not just for Chicago Police Officers. All are invited, encouraged and welcomed to the HAPA. Whether you are a Chicago Police Officer, Suburban Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Trooper, Special Agent, Federal Officer, Investigator, Correctional Officer, Special Police Officer, etc., from Chicago, from Illinois, or from any other State, or Country for that matter.

I am working hard to offer you benefits, resources, and services through the Hellenic American Police Association, such as a wellness program, financial and legal assistance, the availability of Greek Orthodox Priests as Chaplains for your spiritual needs; coordinated through our Chaplain, Father Chrysanthos “Chris” Kerkeres. I want you to participate in our outings, in Church events, march in Chicago’s Greek Heritage Parade, etc.

We also invite individuals whom are non-law enforcement to join as Associate Members.

The Hellenic American Police Association is a not-for-profit police ethnic association founded in Chicago on February 24, 1993, by Commander Elias Voulgaris, Retired, Chicago Police Department, to unite law enforcement officers of Hellenic heritage; Greek and Greek Cypriot, not just in Chicago, but throughout our beloved United States of America. We also have members from other countries as well.

Our association is comprised of Active Members representing various local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and departments, including from as far away as Alaska.

The Hellenic American Police Association is one of four such associations. The others being the St. Paul’s Society of the New York Police Department (NYPD), the Metropolitan Police Service Greek & Cypriot Association of the Metropolitan Police Service, London, England, and the Victorian Hellenic Police Association, Victoria, Australia.

We remain in brotherly contact with each association.

We are a not-for-profit corporation registered with the Secretary of State of Illinois. We are recognized as an ethnic police association by the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. We are fraternally recognized by the Hellenic Police of Greece.

Our headquarters is located at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Chicago.

Father Chrysanthos “Chris” Kerkeres is our Chaplain.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. — Eccles. 4:9-12
